Where Does the Rest of the Water Come From?

At the heart of Blanchard Springs is the powerful spring itself—a torrent of crystal-clear water that bursts from the mountainside before flowing into Mirror Lake. Every day, millions of gallons surge from the underground river system, making it one of the largest springs in the Ozarks.

Scientists understand the basics. Rainfall seeps through cracks and fissures in the limestone plateau, filtering downward into an intricate network of underground channels. Under favorable conditions, water can travel from the surface to the spring in as little as 20 to 24 hours.
